Tree Pit Root Barriers

The purpose of a Rootbarrier is to provide a physical underground wall or barrier, positioned so plants and trees may grow as freely as possible without causing potential damage of risk to roads, services or buildings.

Normal placement of the Rootbarrier is to place it around the root area protecting areas of risk, but try not to surround the tree or planting. If you surround the tree you are restricting the potential development of the tree, effectively making the plant “pot bound”. The preferred method is placing the root barrier alongside the building, services, and road etc., so that the tree roots cannot gain access to area and potentially cause damage. Installing a non-permeable Rootbarrier can work as a waterproof seal protecting the soil near the planting area from moisture loss laterally, so the moisture content of the soil can be stabilized and will stay constant.

Arboricultural considerations for existing plantings, If it is necessary to install a Rootbarrier close to the main trunk or the installation requires cutting or moving of roots, it would be advisable to engage the services of an arboriculturist to assess the tree prior to the work being carried out, and to help nurse the tree through the period of installation.
